  • Walking trails encompass the Hamble peninsular for a summer of exploration! June 1st, 2009

Residents and visitors are invited to get off the beaten track and discover a different side to the Hamble Valley with a series of trails and guided walks.

According to the Ramblers Association, 15% of all day/leisure trips include a walk with 77% of adults walking for pleasure. In the current recession, more and more people are swapping the gym for the footpath in an effort to save money. Walking can help keep you fit and active with a 20 minute brisk mile burning the same calories as 10 minutes of swimming or 16 minutes of aerobics, and the fresh air and countryside is the perfect stress buster at the end of a day.

Walking Distance produces a range of FREE Hamble Valley publications featuring a number of walking trails to suit all ages and abilities, whether it is for keeping fit, relaxation or simply to walk the dog! It easy for walkers and families to keep active whilst exploring the local surroundings with the added treat of discovering local history.

The Hamble Rail Trail is an easy 4.5 mile walk along a disused railway track which was built towards the end of WW1 to transport aircraft from Manchester to Hamble. The trail links Hamble Common, Royal Victoria Country Park and part of the Solent Way.

As well as relaxing walks through the countryside, the Hamble Valley’s towns and villages offer guided walks and trails including the Cobbett Trail in Botley which follows in the footsteps of Botley’s most famous resident, William Cobbett on a circular 4 mile trail and the Exploring Bursledon leaflet allows walkers to discover the rich and varied history of the village famous for boat and ship building.

For the more serious walker, the Strawberry Trail takes in much of the Hamble peninsular on a self-guided circular long distance trail from Botley to Hamble incorporating Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley and Bursledon. The walk, of around 15 miles of easy to moderate walking, takes in woodland, farmland, Manor Farm Country Park, picturesque old villages, attractions and superb views of the River Hamble.

The new Hamble Valley Official Map encompasses all the walking trails and the footpaths around the country parks, open spaces and nature reserves to give you a plethora of new walks to enjoy this summer.

For walkers who are interested in local history, join the Hamble Valley Heritage Guides on one of the many heritage walks which take place on Sundays throughout the summer, from the pubs and hidden paths of Hamble to Netley Village, Old Bursiedon, Chandlers Ford and Hedge End.

To enjoy the range of Hamble Valley walks, contact Hamble Valley on 023 8023 764 to order your copies of the FREE leaflets and find out local stockists of the Hamble Valley Official Map (cost £1.50) Alternatively visit www.hamblevalley.com
